Photography in New Zealand
New Zealand is a photographer’s dream country. The diversity of the landscapes that can be captured here is unlike anywhere else on earth – the photo opportunities really are endless.
You can drive from an urban centre to the rainforest in the morning, photograph surfers around lunchtime, and then take a helicopter onto a glacier in the afternoon. On top of that you can add the stunning colours of autumn/fall, in several hotspots around the country, the incredible winter sunrises and sunsets over the Southern Alps, and the vast array of wildlife we have here. We’re struggling to think of a better destination for your trip of a lifetime, if photography is your passion. If you’re a keen photographer, check out our blog post, where we’ve covered everything you need to know about photography through the seasons in New Zealand.
Spring Photography Tips...
Spring in New Zealand is roughly September through November. We’d suggest looking out for newly blooming flowers, and also the Southern Lights, to aim your lens at during spring. And Glenorchy, near Queenstown, is a spot we think you’ll get some great shots.
Summer Photography Tips...
New Zealand’s summer months are December through February. We’d recommend focusing your camera on the penguins, dolphins, and seals of Milford Sound – and indeed other coastal areas of the South Island – during summer. Optimum viewing for penguins is December, but breeding season is August – February.
Autumn/Fall Photography Tips...
Autumn/Fall is a great season for capturing really colourful shots. So between the months of March through May we’d suggest taking your camera to Arrowtown – it’s a cute little town near Queenstown, and it has lots of deciduous trees that really put on an impressive autumn/fall show.
